In the gallery of special guitarists this Louisiana man, the “King of Slideco” ranks very high. When he released his first album almost thirty-four years ago, we here in Europe did not believe our ears: that squelchy, fat slide-sound reminded us of nothing else we knew, and soon it showed to be the result of the material Sony used and of his special way of playing, the so-called behind the slide technique. That originality brought him touring work with the late Clifton Chenier, in whose Zydecoband he was the only white man, with John Mayall, and especially with John Hiatt, with whom he was many years one of The Goners.
You can hear his guitar on tens of records, from Little Feat and Gov’t Mule up to Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Hiatt and Johnny Winter.
Ten years ago he stood on this stage as well. That was a festive edition in its time, same as it is now again. For this reason we once more serve you a nice caldron of swampblues.
